As I climb the steps to the official front door of Lexi’s apartment, my mind swirls with fears that I’m crossing a major line here. I’m only supposed to be helping her with one small part of her wedding, not making house calls. Would Mr. Woodward fire me for this? Or worse, will Walt not like this?

But then, Lexi invited me herself. And for all I know, Walt is here too and I can go over the plans with both of them and then be on my way.

That thought doesn’t seem to do anything to keep my heart from racing.

Lexi opens the door with a smile, wrapped in a red and white apron smeared with flour. I’m immediately hit with the delicious smell of baking. More notably, it’s warm inside, but not stifling. Cozy and very homely.

“You made it!” she says. “Can I take your coat?”

“Sure.” I set the folder I brought with me down and shrug out of my coat. “Honestly, I probably didn’t even need it. It’s been so warm out lately.”

“I know,” she says with a groan. “I heard it’s supposed to be fifty degrees today and rainy. Walt and I were hoping for a white Christmas wedding.”

“There’s still two more weeks, so you never know.”

She hangs my coat on the rack behind the door. “I know.”

Her apartment is bigger than I thought it’d be. To the right is the living room with two large windows overlooking Jackson Street. To the left is the kitchen, with a small center island and stainless steel appliances. Lexi moves behind it and continues cleaning up the mess from the baking. With the high ceilings, she looks so small in the space, which isn’t that big in reality. Across the room there’s a doorway that opens to a small hallway leading to what I presume is the bedroom and bathroom.

“Take a seat.” She indicates the barstools by the island. When I sit, she hands me a cookie still hot from the oven. “Try it. Tell me what you think and be brutally honest.”

I take a bite and the gingerbread immediately brings a wave of nostalgia. My mother used to make these all the time when Michael and I were growing up. Just one bite brings back memories of playing in the snow with the Christmas lights glowing or the smell of the wood-burning stove my dad always stoked up or the excitement that built as the anticipation ate away at me waiting for Christmas to arrive.

“This is fantastic.”

“Really?” She flashes a bright smile.

“Add some cream cheese frosting and this is perfection.”

“Funny you should mention that.” She turns and sets a carton of Pillsbury frosting in front of me. “I usually make my own frosting, but this year I cheated with everything I’ve got going on.”

I open the carton and dip a piece of the gingerbread in before taking another bite. “Lex, this is so good. Seriously, you should be running a bakery.”

Instantly, her smile fades and she busies herself with tidying again.
